On the evening of December 19th, 2024, our lives were forever changed when we unexpectedly lost Jamie. The impact on our family—both immediate and extended—has been profound. In the months that followed, we began the journey of reacquiring the Franklin office from its corporate owner—an important step in honoring Jamie’s legacy and returning the practice to its foundation in family-centered care.
During this incredibly difficult time, we were overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of those around us. It’s in life’s most challenging moments that we’re reminded of the blessings we often take for granted. We could never name everyone who has supported us, but we can say with certainty that being part of this community is a true gift—and we are grateful beyond words.
As a tribute to Jamie and the legacy he helped build, we have renamed the practice Legacy Dental Associates.
We hope this new name reflects his enduring commitment to the community and the meaningful relationships he nurtured over the years.
We are pleased to announce that Dr. James Melzer, Sr., Jamie’s father, will be leading patient care. With over 45 years of experience in family dentistry, he brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to our practice. We are also proud to share that Dr. Virginia Vanegas will be joining our team in mid June this year. Looking ahead, our son, Garrison, is set to graduate from the University of Florida, College of Dentistry in April 2026, and aspires to continue the family legacy – hopefully allowing his grandfather a well-earned retirement.

General Dentist
Dr. Virginia Vanegas is a dedicated and compassionate general dentist with a strong commitment to enhancing the dental health of her community. Dr. Vanegas grew up in Miami, Florida, earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Florida International University, and her Master’s degree from Barry University before earning her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from Roseman University of Health Sciences in South Jordan, Utah. She is currently continuing her education through an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program at East Carolina University’s clinic in Sylva, NC. Bilingual in Spanish and English, Dr. Vanegas is proud to offer her services to all her patients in Franklin.
An active member of the Hispanic Dental Association, Dr. Vanegas is also deeply involved in her local community, serving on multiple outreach initiatives aimed at bridging language barriers and providing dental care to those in need. Notably, she participated in multiple mission trips in Latin America, most recently working with the Rotary Club in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, to offer free dental care to underserved communities, showcasing her passion for giving back.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Vanegas enjoys spending quality time with her family, exploring the great outdoors through hiking and camping, and traveling to new places. Her love for adventure and nature fuels her drive to connect with her patients and create a warm, welcoming environment. Dr. Vanegas continues to dedicate herself to the well-being of her patients and the community.
